Julie Mehretu (Born in 1970) and Jessica Rankin (Born in 1971): Abstract art and poetic thread in a colorful partnership
Julie Mehretu, an acclaimed painter known for her massive abstract works, met fellow artist Jessica Rankin in the early 2000s through New York’s close-knit art scene. Their friendship evolved into a relationship, and by 2006, they were partners both in life and creativity. Together, they have two children and have often supported each other’s exhibitions around the world.
Jessica’s embroidery-based art blends poetry and textiles, while Julie’s large-scale canvases are featured in major museums. Both have used their platforms to advocate for LGBTQ visibility in the arts. They once shared a joint studio space in Harlem, where their creative worlds quite literally collided.
