Some Met Gala Dresses Were Masterpieces, Some Looked Like Expensive Cry For Help

Daphne Guinness, 2011

If the avant-garde had a queen, she’d be Daphne Guinness. An English heiress turned fashion rebel, she’s known for her boundary-pushing style, music, film work, and deep ties to Alexander McQueen. She produced an Oscar‑nominated short film, “Cashback,” dropped multiple albums, and even curated shows at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

At the 2011 Met Gala, which celebrated McQueen’s “Savage Beauty,” she arrived in a pale gray feathered gown from his spring/summer 2011 collection. The architectural design featured layers of duck and ostrich plumage that made her look like a living sculpture. To hype it, she actually dressed inside a Barneys window before the event.
