Balls Meet Circus Dreams

Never one to take the boring route, Gael Monfils decided mid-match against Novak Djokovic at the 2010 US Open that staying on the ground was optional. Instead of a standard return, he flung himself into the air, twisted himself, and casually cracked the ball from beneath him with a grin that said he planned it.

Somewhere between a circus act and a highlight reel, Gael’s entire style was about making the impossible look like an accident. Spectators at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center might have needed a replay to believe what they witnessed, but to the Frenchman, chaos was part of the charm.
