These Actors Rejected Some of the Biggest Hollywood Film Roles: Find Out Why!
Most of us believe that being an actor is a walk in the park: relaxing, requiring as much effort as you are willing to put in, enjoyable, and, of course, highly rewarding.
Okay, maybe it is some of those things, but being an actor also takes a lot of effort and dedication to your career. Just ask any of the following actors who rejected roles which have now become some of the most famous characters to have ever come out of Hollywood.
Russel Crowe Rejected Wolverine
The character of Wolverine from the X-Men series, which has millions of fans around the world, has been played by the actor Hugh Jackman ever since the beginning of the film series. But what you most probably don’t know is the fact that the character was first offered to Russel Crowe, the star of movies like Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind.
Although X-Men was already part of the comic books and obviously already had a huge fan following, Crowe still decided to reject the role on the grounds that he did not want to be associated with the image of a wolf once more after Gladiator (he had a wolf as a pet and armor with a wolf theme in the film). We don’t understand why that would’ve been such a bad thing considering the fact that Crowe’s popularity still waned after the early 2000s, but he must have had his reasons.

Regardless, it is said that Hugh Jackman was recommended by none other than Crowe himself for the role of Wolverine after he had rejected the role, so some credit of the film series’ success should go to him as well.
Imagine John Krasinski as Captain America
Chris Evans has done great justice to the role of Captain America not only because he is a wonderful actor but also because his body structure accurately fit the description of the muscular frame of the Captain depicted in the comic books. But before Evans secured the role, it was Krasinski who had been invited to do a screen test for it.
We know Krasinski from his legendary portrayal of Jim Halpert in the US version of the hit TV show, The Office. Hence, there is no doubt it would’ve been really funny to see him become Captain America because we would’ve still expected him to say something funny.
But that was not the reason he didn’t secure the part. According to reports, Krasinski, all dressed up in the Captain America suit, was conducting a screen test for the role when he saw Chris Hemsworth (who plays Thor in the Avengers series) on the set, shirtless and flaunting those impeccable pectoral muscles. Immediately drawing a comparison between himself and Hemsworth, Krasinski realized he was not Captain America material.

Ian McKellen Could’ve Been Dumbledore
There is absolutely nothing more Harry Potter fans wanted after the death of the original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris than to find a replacement who looked and spoke more or less like him. But what they ended up with was Michael Gambon, who embodied Dumbledore in a much sterner way compared to Harris.
So it obviously comes as a shock that Ian McKellen, the same person who embodied the legendary Lord of the Rings character of Gandalf the White (or Grey, depending on where you are in the book or film series), could’ve embraced Dumbledore and brought the character to life in the same (or possibly, even better) way as Harris did in the first two Harry Potter films.

However, the actor refused to do the role. Why? Because Harris had insulted him when he was still alive, calling him and a few other actors somewhat passionless in their acting styles.
Considering the fact that Harris did not like McKellen as an actor, and now the latter was being requested to take over his role, it all seemed very inappropriate to McKellen (rightfully so), and he refused the role.
