Single Parent? Here’s How You Can Ensure a Happy Childhood For Your Kids

Do you remember those days when single parents were considered odd, when the usual question inquiring about your significant other kept pouring in because it was always assumed that the child must have both a father and a mother? A lot has changed in the last 5 decades or so, especially the idea of a quintessential American family.
According to statistics, back in the ‘60s almost 88% of all children were raised within a two-parent household. In comparison, only 69% of the children get to experience the same today, while the rest live with a single parent.
Considering these figures, it is safe to say that the trends have definitely shifted, and although it is still preferred by the majority that they provide a two-parent household to their children, the idea that a single parent can do an equally good enough job of raising a child has become generally accepted.

Being a Single Parent
It is not easy being a parent, and when you must perform the roles of both mommy and daddy, you can be sure that your job as a parent is bound to be quite difficult to manage. However, although the challenges faced by single parents may be unique to them, that does not mean they are not able to overcome them to raise a good kid.
But it goes without saying that single parents can use all the help they can get, and the more help and support they have, either from family or friends, or even the community, the happier the children end up becoming.
Ways To Improve Your Single Parenting
There is no set guidelines when it comes to parenting, however there are a few methods which you can follow to ensure you are providing a healthy environment at home for your kids.
Creating Routines Is A Good Idea
A routine is not only good for you but also for your children, as everyone in the household would know exactly what needs to be done at what time. Children by nature follow their heart, and if it was up to them then none of the chores would ever get done.

To ensure that your children remain part of your team and help you out as much as they can, and also to keep them informed about how much of your attention they should expect and when, a set routine establishes the agenda for the day well in advance, lowering stress levels and improving overall happiness of the household.
This does not need to be very stringent. Just have a set bed time, wakeup time, meal times, and other activity times, as required, and allow yourself and your children sufficient breathers in between to eliminate the feeling that all of you are following some sort of a routine, even though you would be.

Create and Absorb Positive Energy
There is nothing more beneficial for healthy mental development of your children than a positive environment to grow up in, one that is full of love and affection, attention and trust. The more you include your children in activities that generate a positive outcome, such as volunteering at a charity or even doing a one-time good deed, the more they are going to inculcate a sense of compassion within them.
Remember, happiness and contentment does not come from expensive material things, and although your kids would absolutely love the newest gaming console, they would equally appreciate unique experiences as long as they get to spend quality time with you. It is your job to ensure that those experiences offer value to your kids as well.
Teach Your Children Gratitude
There will always be some other kid who will have more than what your kid has, and although you may think that your child will automatically form an understanding of that fact, know that because he or she has been raised by a single parent, there is already a gaping hole in his life which can easily transform into a weakness.
When other children mention having both parents, or simply see them present at school functions supporting their child, it’s very easy for your child to feel incomplete.
The solution to this problem is gratitude. Teach your children that they need to be thankful for all that they do have, eventually shifting away attention from all that they don’t.
