Five to six puppies are standard for most dogs, although the range can surprise even seasoned veterinarians. As the first contractions deepened, each person began counting softly, waiting for tiny cries. The owner’s lips moved silently with the numbers, her hope visible in trembling fingers. The mother stayed strong, driven by instinct older than memory.
Every pup arrived slick and breathing, the towels piling up, one life after another filling the air with squeaks. Between deliveries, the veterinarian checked pulses, massaged them, and encouraged them. When the tenth arrived, disbelief replaced fatigue. Twelve healthy bodies wriggled against their mother’s belly. It was a flood of life, rare and miraculous.
