Hana crouched lower, every inch of her screaming to run, but she stayed. Her eyes didn’t leave the bear’s. There was no rage in its stance—only something tense and guarded. Then she saw it. Nestled against the bear’s front leg, a small, shivering body. It looked too fragile to belong in any of this. That’s when it clicked.
The bear wasn’t cornered. It was shielding. Protecting. Hana’s pulse thudded in her ears, but her thoughts settled. Whatever had happened before this moment didn’t matter. What mattered now was trust. She didn’t speak, didn’t move closer. She just let it see her clearly—and hoped that would be enough.
