The words landed like a punch. “They’re a hybrid,” the vet said slowly. “Somehow—part wild dog, part bear.” Hana and Peter stared at him, waiting for the joke. There wasn’t one. He looked genuinely stunned. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” He explained that the bear must’ve recently lost her own cubs—trauma that could drive her to adopt the helpless, no matter how strange.
