Tightening Her Grip
Peter had disappeared into the well’s mouth, swallowed by shadow. Hana crouched near the edge, muscles locked, fingers wound tight around the rope. Every slight tug sent a pulse of hope—he was still moving, still okay. But then came the sudden pull. The rope whipped through her hands before she could react, burning her palms.
Her eyes snapped to the knot. It was loose—not gone, but loosening fast. “No, no, no,” she whispered, lunging to grab it. Her fingers scraped stone, caught nothing. The line slackened, then tightened again—but there was no weight, no movement. Her breath caught. Her body froze. She’d let go when it mattered most.
