Hana held the trembling creature close, its tiny body warm against her chest. “You’re safe,” she murmured, setting it gently into a bed of leaves and her folded sweater. Peter’s hands reappeared again and again, each time carrying another bundle. Together, they worked in rhythm—lift, cradle, place.

When the last one was finally out, five small forms huddled together, blinking up at them with tired, dazed eyes. There were only four arms between them. Hana did the math as quickly as Peter did, their eyes meeting with the same quiet question. They could carry two each. But one would be left behind. And that wasn’t an option.
