The image of that trembling creature in the ER clung to Hana’s thoughts—its tiny frame, those unblinking eyes that seemed to plead without sound. “We can’t leave them,” she said aloud, more to herself than anyone. Her voice caught the edge of Peter’s breathless reply, still echoing from the dark.
Spinning on her heel, she scanned the clearing. That tree might be enough to anchor the rope. “I’m getting you out,” she yelled, already moving. “And them too.” Her hands moved fast, tying knots with fingers that shook but wouldn’t stop. Something had brought them here, and Hana wasn’t about to let it be for nothing.
