As if the bear—and the fragile thing it carried—were someone else’s problem. Her jaw tightened. “It might not have that long,” she said, voice cracking despite her fight to stay composed. But the room had already gone back to avoiding her. No one followed. No one stood up. And in that moment, the hallway somehow felt colder, emptier than the room with the bear.
