The Cries Were Getting Closer
The cries didn’t stop—they grew sharper and more desperate, slicing through the thick night air. Hana and Peter stumbled into a clearing, breath catching as they spotted the well, its stones chipped and moss-covered. The sound was coming from inside. The bear stood beside it, eyes fixed on Hana, then the opening, then back again.
Peter knelt beside the edge, tugging a coil of rope from his pack. “I’ll go,” he said quietly, testing its strength with a firm tug. Hana stepped closer, peering into the blackness. Whatever was down there, it wasn’t alone—and neither were they. Her hands shook, but she nodded. It was time.
