The morning of the vet visit, the Johnsons did their best to stay calm. “It’s just a routine check-up, Nyx. Nothing to be worried about,” Mrs. Johnson assured him. But even she could feel an odd tension. Once they were out of the car, Alex held Nyx’s leash. The big dog’s ears twitched at every sound. “He seems nervous,” Emma whispered.
As they stepped into the lobby, Nyx’s muscles tensed as his eyes scanned the room. “Easy, boy,” Mr. Johnson murmured. The receptionist smiled. “What a handsome dog.” Nyx didn’t react to the compliment. Ethan glanced at his parents. “Do you think he knows something?”
