Harvey Pekar’s Fiery Clash with David Letterman

Harvey Pekar, celebrated for his autobiographical comic series “American Splendor,” made multiple appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” in the late 1980s. His interviews often veered into contentious territory. In August 1988, tensions escalated when he criticized NBC’s parent company, General Electric, accusing David of being a corporate shill.

This confrontation led to Harvey’s ban from the show. The heated exchange left the audience in stunned silence, witnessing an unscripted moment of raw television. His willingness to challenge the status quo highlighted his rebellious spirit, even at the cost of mainstream exposure. Despite the ban, he shockingly returned in 1993.
