Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien’s Late-Night Showdown
In 2009, NBC’s late-night lineup faced upheaval. Jay Leno, the long-standing host of “The Tonight Show,” transitioned to a primetime slot with “The Jay Leno Show,” while Conan O’Brien, famed for his quirky humor on “Late Night,” took over “The Tonight Show.”
However, both programs struggled with ratings, prompting NBC in January 2010 to propose moving Jay back to his original 11:35 p.m. slot and pushing Conan’s “Tonight Show” to 12:05 a.m. Conan publicly rejected this shift, stating it would “seriously damage” the show’s legacy. The ensuing controversy led to the latter’s departure from NBC, with the former reclaiming “The Tonight Show” until his 2014 retirement.
