The Grim Reaper Tried, But These Famous Faces Said Hell No

Eva Marie Saint – Born in 1924

Some careers begin with a whisper, but Eva Marie Saint’s started with a bang. Her very first film, “On the Waterfront” (1954), paired her with Marlon Brando and earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Not bad for a debut. By 1959, she was matching wits with Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” playing one of cinema’s most elegant spies.

Her quiet strength and subtle emotion made her stand out in an era filled with prominent personalities. Over the decades, her roles came more sparingly, but she earned a Primetime Emmy in 1990 for “People Like Us,” and later appeared in “Superman Returns” as Martha Kent.
