Janelle Monáe turned the 2019 Met Gala into her high-fashion art exhibit. The theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” invited over-the-top excess, and she delivered in full theatrical flair. She teamed with Christian Siriano on a surrealist masterpiece, a bold red, white, and pink gown featuring an embroidered eye that actually blinked, and a matching eye-shaped clutch.
Plus, perched atop her head was a tower of four black hats, handcrafted by milliner Sarah Sokol in just 40 hours. Janelle rose to fame with her funk-pop albums and roles in “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.” She earned Grammy nominations, a SAG Award, and the Billboard Trailblazer honor in 2018.
